Several major supermarket chains are expanding their lists of banned and restricted ingredients across own-label ranges.

Last month, UK supermarket Tesco announced it was restricting the use of 114 additives in an effort to meet consumer concern around ultra-processed foods (UPFs). The move represents an expansion of the retailer’s existing additives policy, with the number of restricted additives rising from 65 last year.

“Making healthy, sustainably-produced food affordable and accessible for every household is a priority for Tesco,” a Tesco spokesperson tells Food Formulator.
